Really cheap, nice rooms (its still a hostel...). If you want a quite environment probably the wrong place but for a few fun days the perfect location. The food is surprisingly good!

I enjoyed my two nights at Gilligan's. As an older guest I experienced nothing but welcoming, friendly helpfulness; not the slightest hint of ageism from anyone. I would have given it five stars but for one thing: that damned sub-wooffer thumping away with its irregular beat, reverberating through the building, right up to my fourth floor dorm, till 2:30 am. Sleeping was a bit of a challenge.
It's a party hostel. If you aren't in the mood for that it's kind of lame. The room/bathroom/shower were clean. I liked that each room had it's own bathroom/shower that were shared with just the room members. My room was big, I think 8 people in there. It depends on the people you get in your room, but since it's a party hostel, odds are people will be loud and bringing other people in there for sex during the night. That's not really the hostels fault to be fair. The biggest complaint I had aside from the noise was that all the outlets are by the door, far away from everyone's bed. This makes it impossible to charge your phone at night and have it near you to use as an alarm. They are attached to a club so if that's your thing, that's a plus. The food at the club has a buffet that's actually a good price/quality. I went right after NYE and the roof was covered in people's used condoms though so that was pretty gross.
My girlfriend and I had an amazing time here. We stayed in one of the hotel rooms and had just as much fun as the hostel folks. There was always something to do here every night and the staff was very friendly. Quick 10 minute walk to the marina and lagoon. I would definitely stay here again if I came back to Cairns!
